venkatesh subramanian 5pts As Wilbur Ross, the new commerce secretary once said in private, Brexit is a god given opportunity for countries in Europe what has been not right fully earned or gained by the British as part of their membership of the SM! Looks like the EU27 and EU may squander that opportunity!Frankly speaking Merkel has been for long living off on the good work of Schroder and has done nothing good either for Germany or EU (always very risk averse both domestically and at EU level)! She off-course did show some moral strength when thousands of Syrian refugees landed in Europe! With elections in both Germany and France wide open at this stage, what happens in the Commission is irrelevant (and what Germany thinks of that)! Off-course, it is good that Germany realises that EU institutions, i.e, both Commission, Parliament and to some extent Council President are assuming a life of their own and cannot be pushed over for its convenience as has been the case in most of Merkel's time!May be who knows, it is Juncker's way of getting Schulz elected as German Chancellor as a pay back for the effort that Schulz took in ensuring Merkel finally had to support Juncker as the commission president!Britain was always a minor power player within the EU except that some of its good ideas got picked up and implemented by the EU! Given the legalities of how the article 50 process work and how a new third country FTA deal has to be done (i.e, as per the legal process of how things have to be done for UK post Brexit!), the Commission is at the upper hand of the negotiations irrespective of who leads the commission! It is May's choice what she wants to do, i.e, stay in negotiations or walk way!
